The WKBW news outlet in Buffalo, New York, profiled a mother who regularly takes her young children to the chiropractor. Her youngest, Caleb, is only 4 weeks old, but according to video footage, he already seems to be a pro at it. The video shows the chiropractor “gently” digging her fingers into the baby boy’s back and slightly shifting his head to help with neck alignment. All of these things are done while Caleb rests in his mother’s lap. Admittedly, he doesn’t cry, whine, or even resist the doctor’s touch too much. The chiropractor makes it clear that adjustments for infants are much different than they are for adults, because it is important to be extra gentle as babies’ bones are still growing and have extra cartilage. More from CafeMom: Video of Dad Watching His Newborn Get His First Shots Is Every Parent Ever After going to regular chiropractor appointments throughout her pregnancy, Caleb’s mom, Abbey Cole, says she had the little boy adjusted for the first time when he was only 2 weeks old. “He nursed well, but I had some pain, so I thought maybe there was something going on with his mouth or the way he was turning,” she explained. The mother decided to take her son to Dr. Alaina Rowswell-Kulikowski. After only one appointment, the chiropractor determined that Caleb was having trouble rotating his neck. She made a few adjustments which, according to Abbey, helped. “It has made a difference since,” she told WKBW. “Nursing is no big deal now.” Many parents are starting to seek out chiropractic care for babies. According to the American Chiropractic Association, more than 30 million pediatric chiropractic visits took place in 2000 and that number has only continued to rise. Parents insist the visits help with everything from colic to nursing issues and improve the overall health and wellness of their babies. But, chiropractic care in general is a touchy subject for many people, and there are many in the medical community who don’t stand behind claims that the practice has benefits for infants. Some health-care professionals claim that chiropractors are entirely unnecessary for infants and children, as the vast majority of pediatricians are “trained to deal with most of the complications that can arise in the immediate period after a baby is born,” as Science-Based Medicine notes. Yale University neurologist Dr. Steven Novella takes it a step further, calling the treatments unethical. He told Inside Edition, “The idea of a tiny baby needing to have their back realigned is just pure nonsense. This is just subjecting children to an unpleasant procedure without any evidence or benefit or even an assurance that it is reasonably safe. This is completely unethical in my opinion.” Others argue that there simply isn’t enough science to prove chiropractic treatments are safe for infants. The effect of chiropractic care on babies has been seriously understudied by the scientific community. One 2012 study explored the efficacy of manual therapy in colicky infants, and with only 104 participating babies and four randomized controlled trials, they did deduce that three out of four trial participants seemed to display some improvement. But the lack of studies to help back up or dismiss the data makes it difficult to prove a case. Still, even limited scientific evidence doesn’t stop many parents from getting their kids involved with chiropractic care early. WKBW spoke with local chiropractor Dr. Steve Niemiec, who claimed that he has been seeing more and more parents bring their kids to him in recent years. He placed the blame on the pressure today’s kids are under. “Kids are more stressed in today’s society,” he said. “They’re getting less sleep. Bedtime is a lot later for children.” More from CafeMom: This Mom Hiding From the ‘Fancy Mom’ at the Bus Stop Is Our New BFF As for Abbey Cole and her children, she says that she will continue to book regular appointments for them as they grow older in an effort to help them maintain a healthy lifestyle. She also encourages other parents to try it out for their kids as well. “I just don’t think people know this is an option,” she said. “That’s made a huge difference in the health of our family.” But as with most things involving the health of our kids, parents should always seek the advice of a qualified pediatrician before subjecting infants to any kind of alternative medical treatment or chiropractic adjustment.
