Yet, people, even the well-meaning ones, still bombard Black feminists with questions and comments that undercut our commitment to equality. Most of these ignorant comments stem from a fundamental lack of understanding of what it means to be a Black feminist. Here it is, in a nutshell: Black Feminism arose when Black women realized their specific needs — racism and sexism, specifically — weren’t being addressed in the Black Power Movement or the Women’s Rights Movement....

Good times. This is where experts like Amy Spangler, president of BabyGooroo.com and former President of the International Lactation Consultant Association (ILCA), comes in. There are not stats on that, but I bet a bunch entertain the thought. I know a woman with a terrible nanny — and by terrible I mean she comes in late, is lazy, and even worse, was once caught drinking on the job. Totally deserves to be canned, right? Well this woman’s hubby refused to fire her. When she did it anyway, he felt so bad he hired her as an assistant at his company....

I want them to be self-sufficient, after all. It makes them confident, responsible, and helps them grow up. Not that I want them to grow up faster or anything. I just prefer to not, you know, be packing a 16-year-old’s lunch every day. My kids are 5, 7, and 9. At their ages, these are the things I expect them to know: *I said expect. We’re still working on number 6....

And for nearly a year, I would steel myself before taking my daughter’s bottle out in public, putting up a wall to protect myself from the rude comments that seem to be part and parcel of using formula in this day and age. But no wall was ever big enough. They still hurt. They hurt then, and to be honest, they still smart a bit now, with a healthy 8-year-old running around my house....
