You can probably guess at least five out of the top ten most popular doggies, if not every single one, because, uh, they’re super popular and you probably own one. But you’ll never guess the new breeds they added. There are some serious tongue twisters in there. And some seriously weird toes. The new breeds are by far the coolest part of the announcement. They are a trip!
Entlebucher Mountain Dog is a cutie from the Swiss Alps. She looks a lot like a Burmese Mountain Dog. This is a no-brainer for the AKC and all I want to do is snorgle her face. The Norwegian Lundehund, on the other hand, is a little funky looking. She’s a bad-ass climber with six toes … on each foot! Creepy. Oh! And she can tip her head back until it touches her backbone. That flexibility and those extra toes? This dog would be killer at yoga. The Xoloitzcuintli is the piece de resistance. She’s a rare breed from Mexico that’s thought to have special healing powers, and lord knows she looks like some wacky witch dog. Here’s a close up:
Xolo Dog Sweet mohawk, Xolo! I’m happy to see the AKC has welcomed this funny little thing into the family. Now, I don’t have any pets, but one day I will be the proud owner of a miniature Dachshund and he’ll wear a tiny, red, worn-in baseball cap and we’ll go for walks and read the newspaper together on our favorite park bench. Finally, here’s a list of the top 10 most popular dogs in the U.S from the AKC: Told you you could have guessed them. The pups on the list didn’t change at all from 2009’s report, but the order changed a bit. Bulldogs and Boxers switched spots, and so did the Beagle and Golden Retriever. What do you think of the top 10 and the new breeds? Images (top to bottom): andrewr/Flickr; Micyaotl/Flickr
